I worked in the costume shop of the Kentucky Shakespeare Company during its 2024 summer season. The company put on three Shakespeare plays, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and The Comedy of Errors. As a costume intern I helped build, distress, embellish, wash, and repair costumes during the run of the shows. Romeo and Juliet and The Comedy of Errors had 19th and 16th Century period costumes, including, shoes, tights, wigs, and jewelry. The Tempest had a unique contemporary approach focused on the fantastical and weathered garments of characters stranded on the island. Between the three shows there were numerous costumes to organize, label, and wash, paying close attention to the garments that needed to be handwashed. With a team of great collaborators I saw the shows through construction to strike.
