The Butchery was SCAD produced short film with horror elements. It had a lot of absurd and symbolic imagery as a butcher questioned his job and life as he was dying. As the costume designer I worked closely with the special effects makeup artist and director on the blood effects. I designed the outfits and after director feedback sourced it based on the budget. I got multiples of the outfits as we needed duplicates for scenes with and without blood. There was a lot of discussion before and on set determining where we wanted the hook to enter and the cuts on the back. I helped the actor get dressed, making him feel comfortable in the scene, and with the makeup artist distressed and bloodied the outfit. There was a lot of patience, careful planning, and clean up involved with the mess of fake blood. Because there are multiple camera angle and shots in film I had to make sure the costume remains the same and in continuity, all while making the actor, who was on the ground for part of it, feel comfortable. With the outfit being so white any mess and blood in going to stand out, which is good for the dramatic scene when we wanted it. I used extra aprons and garments to dress the background actors in another scene. In a project that involves elements like special effects makeup collaboration was great to have, from hearing the director's vision, to discussing the plan with makeup artist, and set and props backing us up.
