Dress Form

An interesting project I completed for my SCAD Dressing the Persona course, which taught costume construction skills, was making a dress form. It was intriguing looking at the many pattern pieces of it. There were very long darts which I sewed to get the curve of the form. Because this particular dress form is a Victorian style one it is a more hourglass shape with bigger curves and a tighter waist that connects at a v. The dress form was made out of a very sturdy duck cloth which is firm but would still allow you to pin a garment to it if need be. The neck and armholes were reinforces with cardboard which was layered between fabric. On the bottom a circular plank of plywood was placed so it had a strong base. The get the full shape of the dress form it was stuffed with a lot of Poly-fil. When finished I hand stitched the final side seam to close it up neatly. It was a cool experience stitching something that wasn't your traditional garment. You can look at the different phases and steps of my project in the slides above.
