Renderings

Batman Returns
by Daniel Waters

I rendered costumes for a reimagining of the Tim Burton film Batman Returns. This blockbuster sequel follows Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, as he faces off against the villainous Penguin and the evil businessman Max Shreck and tries a relationship with the troubled Catwoman, Selina Kyle. I put my own spin on the characters, designing steampunk outfits inspired by Victorian fashion. They include suits, workwear, ballgowns, superhero outfits, and masquerade costumes.

Shakespeare In Love
by Lee Hall

I was part of the design team for the theatrical production of Shakespeare In Love at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Part of the design process was rendering costume ideas for the characters. My illustrations of the lead Will Shakespeare's outfit and Viola De Lesseps wedding dress were influential in determining our design.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong
By Henry Lewis, Henry Shields, and Jonathan Sayer

For my senior capstone project at the Savannah College of Art and Design I designed and built costumes based on the play Peter Pan Goes Wrong. The comedy is a play within a play that follows a theatre troupe as they try to put on a production of Peter Pan. I illustrated and did technical flats for the lead characters, Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy Darling, and Captain Hook. The costumes involve quick rigging for quick changes and stunts, including flying.

LilySci-fi Fangirl and High School Student in TV Show

These are costumes I designed  for a character on a hypothetical tv show. I created character sheets of her looks based off just a scene breakdown for each episode. The character's name is Lily. She is a quirky sci-fi geek who dreams of being a writer. She is an artist, and paints on some of her clothes. She wears a lot of graphic t-shirts and themed accessories. Lily is an outsider at her school so she goes all out to be known as the alien sci-fi girl, going full cosplay for the school dance and play. Because of her school's culture and the fan-fiction she writes some of her outfits are more suggestive. Her iconic item is her denim jacket which she painted with her favorite sci-fi quotes and symbols. Lily wears it with many outfits because it is like her armor, representing her safe place which are her stories. Even when going through relationship struggles and the school's new policies, including switching to uniforms, she always has the sci-fi world to turn to.

"State of Grace" Music Video

These costumes I designed are for a theoretical music video. I listened to the song "State of Grace" by Taylor Swift, focusing on the emotions and visuals that came to mind. I did freehand drawing and collages to get my ideas down, focusing on being more abstract at first. Then I turned my design ideas into renderings. Each of the five beats of the song gets its costume, connected through a story. It is about the different stages of love where you are heartbroken by the past but exciting for new love which turns frustrating through the pain the relationship can cause. But then it turns golden as you learn to accept and live with all the different shades and feelings in a relationship. With mythological and religious connotations in the song I designed long loosely draped garments that make her look like a goddess. I did a technical flat of the final costume to show how you would construct the garment.

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer

These costumes are based off a film script that I analyzed and notated. To keep my designs original I did not know what film it was, but I later found out it was Amadeus, a biopic about Mozart and his musical rival Salieri. I designed costumes for Mozart to be more colorful and flamboyant as he has a more carefree show-off attitude while Salieri is more muted and rigid. Both become more wild and unkempt as they age and their health and sanity deteriorate. The story shows their pride, arrogance, envy, and obsession of music and each other. Mozart's wife Costanze gets caught in the crossfire of the feud. Once a sweet young girl courting him she ends up struggling to hold her family together as her husband squanders away their money. The renderings I have done show their character transformation through different scenes of the film.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret
by Brian Selznick

The Invention of Hugo Cabret centers on a young boy Hugo who is living inside the walls of a Paris train station. Inspired by the illustrations in the children's novel and researching 1930s fashion I designed the main characters. The color palettes of all of their outfits is based on the cover of the book. Hugo wear a coat with many pockets to hold all his gadgets and tools for his invention. His outspoken friend Isabelle has a more vibrant out and wears a cute beret referencing the location. Her adoptive father Georges Melies, who mentors Hugo, is based on a real life historical figure. He did magic shows before he became a filmmaker. With his star cape and top hat I showed through costume the books message, that filmmakers are like magicians and films are magic.

Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen

Peer Gynt, written by famous playwright Henrik Ibsen, is a fantastical play based on a Norwegian epic. I teamed up with other designers to reinvent it, turning it into a circus, which fit the odd supernatural world of the play. I designed several characters and the circus tent. The Green Glad Woman is the troll princess so she had nature elements in her costume and would have on a lot of green makeup. She is a knife thrower because of anger and attacks at Peer Gynt for leaving her. Ingrid, the fire dancer, has elements of traditional Norwegian wear which she sheds off when she leaves her family and fiancee, choosing to forge her own path. Solveig also has traditional patterns and embroidery but they are more pink and red and heart shaped for her loving and romantic nature. She is a tightrope walker because she balances everyones wants and expectation of her.

The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry

After analyzing the entire script of The Philadelphia Story I designed the costumes for the last scene, when the lead Tracy decides to get remarried to her former husband C.K. Dexter Haven. I gave them complementary colors, as well as Liz and Mike, to show that each pair is a couple. The upper class Lord Family and Dexter wear more elegant colors, fabrics, and patterns than their guests. I looked at fashion drawings and photographs of the period, the early 1940s, for my designs. I created a list of all the items in each costume with swatches of potential fabrics. I payed attention to each characters personality, relationships, and role in the play. Hair and makeup are noted as well on each full character sheet

Emily in Paris by Darren Star

These renderings are of costumes for a potential pilot of Emily In Paris. From reading the pilot script I designed costumes for a scene where Emily and her friend Mindy are eating at her neighbor and love interest Gabriel's restaurant. Emily dresses in bold colors and in outfits that she thinks the French wear but actually her more Americanized view. Mindy also dresses boldly, and has an eye for designer clothes, but is a little more classy having been in Paris a little longer. Gabriel has a nice flattering chef's uniform that isn't too fancy or too casual for his restaurant. The other speaking character, the waiter, is also professional but not meant to stand out against the leads. The bright saturated colors and flashy acessories fit the comedic and fashionable world of the show.

Midnight in Everwood
by M.A. Kuzniar

I was inspired by a book I was reading, Midnight in Everwood, to draw one of the main character's beautifully described costumes. The story is a retelling of The Nutcracker so the main character Marietta wears a lot of lavish ballet outfits. This one has black on her tulle skirt and the silhouettes of trees on her bodice, as well as a lot of gold. The gold makeup and shimmer on her skin and outfit are meant to look like sugar. Marietta looks as tasty, shiny, mesmerizing, and dangerous as the candy world she finds herself trapped in.
