I was the costume supervisor and one of the costume designers for SCAD production of Shakespeare In Love, the play based on the Academy Award-winning film. It reimagines Shakespeare's writing process as an unknown playwright with writers block till he meets his muse in Viola De Lesseps. Her aristocratic upbringing and betrothal prove obstacles to their love and her dream of being an actor.
I was part of the design team for the show, mentored by the Emmy winning costume designer Janie Bryant. It was a great collaborative project as we all shared in the research, purchase, design, and construction tasks. We organized a rental package from the Sarasota Opera House, taking care to keep track and maintain the more elaborate costumes.
As the costume supervisor of the show I was in charge of wardrobe paperwork, making costume piece lists, budget sheets, and track lists. I led the wardrobe crew, mentoring underclassmen, to dress a cast of 45 people, including fast quick changes and repairs. I was also the ager/dyer on this project, distressing the lower class character's garments so they looked like they were from the Elizabethan age. My time and effort, working 25 hours a week in addition to classes, made me a leader of the costume department on this show.
