Millinery

I learned how to create a hat as milliners would do with a hat block. I made a felt hat from scratch using this method. I got to work with new materials like wire joiners, grossgrain, millinery needles, and the particular milliner's wool felt. It is amazing how you can shape the felt so much by steaming it. Pinning it to the hat block so it is secure in the shape you want takes some effort though. I sewed the hat pieces together securely in neat stitches. I finished by covering the edges in a nice grossgrain ribbon. For an extra something on top I crafted two flowers out of felt The project made me appreciate the time and effort of milliners in making hats. You can scroll through all my steps of the process in the slides above.
